Polyester film backings are water-resistant, so the abrasive may be run with a water or oil-based lubricant, which helps wash away unwanted swarf and debris and keeps the abrasive running cool. The belts are also colour-coded by grade to help you reduce the risk of selecting the wrong grade. Many micro-finished products require a specific Ra, or roughness average, when applying to thermal spray coatings, carbides, ceramics, exotic alloys, or other composites.
